The Pitch And Other Ramblings...

So, Rob and I have decided on three possible books out of our list of dozens to develop further. The WildSide and two others I won't name until I can get to working on them. We're meeting with Julian tomorrow, so hopefully he'll be able to come on board. His style is perfect for the WildSide and his pencil knows the characters far better than mine does. I'd take over the inking if he decides to join up, otherwise, I'll have to tackle the pencils and inks - Barry Windsor-Smith I'm not, so I'm nervous how well that would be received if I end up doing both. To prepare for that possibility, I've been working day in and out on drawing the characters and where needed, redesigning them to suit my style. So far I'm pleased with how it's going and I really hope I get to share some of it with you soon.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch -

Rob's got a break from his rap tour, which is good. He came back with news that an animation studio in Japan is interested in some of our properties and now it's up to us to find ways to work in their vision of the characters without jeopardizing the look and ideals we want for them. Tough one that. The studio's been really positive though, even going so far as to offer to foot the bill on the whole thing - that comes at a big cost to us though if we decide to do it.  So for now, we've been given some time to work things out and decide. Both Rob and I are thrilled for the interest but we're a bit wary of some of the changes the studio is wanting us to make. I'll let ya know how it goes.

And in other news -

The software company I work for has just sent me a copy of XSI 6.2 to test our products with. You heard correctly, XSI 6.2.  Now I have nearly everything I need to get a decent reel done. My only problem is that I don't know much about video editing. Animation - sure. Modeling - you bet. Comic Illustration - definitely. Video Editing - whatchootalkingboutwillis? Seriously, for me, Video Editing is right up there with Web Design, two things I know I totally suck at. lol. I've enough models now that I could make a reel and land a job pretty fast at a studio but uh... I don't know how to make a good reel.  I may end up just sending out images instead along with a CV and letter of intent.  It's not as great as a reel but better to do that then make a half-ass attempt at editing only to lose work because of it.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled journal entry...already in progress -

So what do you guys (and gals) think? I feel like I can do both modeling and illustration but Mom, in her best attempt at support, thinks I should concentrate on one.

The opinions expressed in this entry are solely those of Teyon Alexander and not e frontier or its owners. Any sudden urge to kick the shit out of something should be directed at him. Honest. What's with the knife? Hey...put that down. I'll scream. HELP!

Hey Teyon :)

Focus on both.. Show polymodeling/sculpting& illustration skills :]

Afaik, 95% of demoreels are watched fast forward/without sound... I doubt they pay attention to some cool editing, music and stuff..

I think both talents play into each other just as well but I do think your personal greatest strength is modelling!

Modelling can get you into many aspects from previz, movies, video games and illustrations.

Video editing has plenty of tutorials and resources, so I wouldn't worry man. Worst comes to worst, talk to someone on a video editting forum and see if they'd be willing to do it? You only have to show off your modeling skills, you don't have to be a master video editor.

As for what you should do... I think it really depends. I don't think you should give either up. Maybe use a little of both together. Model a character, illustrate the surroundings. Model the surroundings, draw the character. Draw everything. Model everything. Show how flexible you are, whatever. But overall, do what you feel is right. I don't think I could give up modeling personally. And drawing is such a cool skill.

TL;DR: DO BOTH!

Thanks for the advice. :) I don't know why I let my mom put silly ideas in my noggin'.

Meh, I know the feeling. =P Moms are influential because we've always gone to them for advice. It's like, "Oh, mom said so. She's mom, she knows better, so she must be right!"

I don't know anything about business, but nowadays the more you know, the easier it'll be to get a job.
If you like both it and you can get jobs with both talents, why not do both?
If you only choose one, you might miss the other one and grow really sick of the other? O:
