Ok, so lip synch/facial animation in gaming has never really been that great. Sure we've had a few standouts but even games like Uncharted fall short on some of the subtle nuances of lip movement - like lip sticking. No, I'm not talking about that shade of red that makes your lips look fancy ladies, I'm talking about a little thing that happens when you talk. Our lips, as they open and close, pull at each other before parting. It's a subtle thing but something that we notice when absent. Image Metrics, a facial animation company, has made great strides in bringing the faces subtle movements like lip sticking to gaming. LA NOIRE is the first game I have seen that really showcases the power of a mouth that's animated well. Watch the trailer for the game and you will honestly feel the characters have more emotion than you're used to seeing in a game and it's all about the facial animation, a big part of which is the mouth. I'm floored by what Rockstar has done and I hope more advancements in this area see the light soon. Graphics in games have made leaps and bounds in improvement after improvement, it's about time character animation did too.
