So I've lamented in the past over the low amount of traffic may DA page gets but I'm not ungrateful for the traffic I do receive. I am, however, immensely curious about the images that get looked at or more to the point, the one image that gets looked at the most. [link] Is a model from my Rhino 3D years, the shadow of which has long since faded in my mind. Oddly, despite the fact of the image's age and despite the rather mundane subject and poor execution (in my opinion), it is my most viewed and most faved image. This both pleases and baffles me. What attracts people to this image? Has the work done afterward been of lesser visual appeal or do people just like shiny things? I feel I must spend some time dissecting the image to discern an answer.

Oh, and no, it has not escaped my attention that by linking to the image I have contributed to the very thing that confounds me.

I consider myself an amature 3d artist, and have been interested in programs like zBrush, which you seem to do quite outstanding work with. I've got my BFA in Figurative Sculpting, so doing it on the computer seems like a natural progression for me. Unfortunatly my old computer got zonked and I had a ripped off zBrush 9.0 on it, and havent had the time to install it again, since I found it to be semi-cumbersome to make something from start to finish.

I love your work honestly, and I think I've looked atleast once, of all the pieces in your gallery. I'm even surprised to see your non-3d artwork! A nice touch to be sure!

I have no idea why folks would ignore your more recent works. But I have no idea why most people do the things that they do

As for the sword. Aside from the anime bit, which seems to garner a lot of attention around here, the design is elegant and strong. It's simply a good piece. In my opinion you have much better work but this piece is by no means bad.

I say just chalk it up to human weirdness.

Thanks! Yeah, it may be simpler to classify it as such and call it a day.

BTW, aside from the tutorials on the ZBrush page could you recommend any other sources for learning the intricacies of ZB 3.1?

I think I've got a grasp on sculpting and painting but anything else I'm pretty much lost when it comes to applying materials and all the other stuff.

A lot of 2D artists complain about not being able to break ground with their original characters, because people are only into fanart...so you're doing 3D which people generally have all kinds of issues with for whatever reasons and then you're also doing original characters. Basically the only place you'll get any respect is the modeling forums...UNTIL you hit some nerve with one piece of art and then if you model a pile of doo-doo there will be something indescribably profound about it.

Interesting theory. I can see many of the points raised may have contributed to the case at hand. Thanks!

I think there are a couple of things at work...first of which being that DeviantArt by and large is anti-3D. If you're not an already established 3D artist or until you attain some serious commercial success most times people are going to see the thumbnail, think it's cool, click through and say "Oh, it's 3D" or like and not fav it or know that it's 3D and decided even if the thumbnail caught their eye that they won't like it, because it's 3d. It's fucked up, but that's what it is man. Another thing is that I think the sword appealed to the lowest common denominator. A lot of people like sword/weapon design, but I also think that things have changed a bit since the sword pic.

On top of those things scantily clad women with inhuman proportions (not all together horrible lol) or art that is "Manga" inspired or fanart are what's in style as far as original art. Also, people tend to like singular cool looking characters that pop up time and time again in different scenarios that begin to allude to some kind of storytelling.

Dude, I would bet you anything if you did a 3D version of Totoro in a full scene with real 3D hair it would trounce that sword's stats ass a couple of times.
